2 out of 5 stars TNA & Midway Fail To Make An "Impact"   December 5, 2008
D.P. (California)
I'll be honest from the start, I don't do video game reviews because I haven't really been into video games since Super Nintendo & Game Boy Advance as the only games I have for my PS2 are the WWE Video Games dating back to 2003. However after all the hype of TNA Impact & following the actual wrestling product itself, I decided to give this a try & turns out that's all this game was really was...hype. First of all, there is no "create a character" mode like advertised. The movesets are very limited with some wrestlers doing moves that they never did or would do in real life & you don't even get the options of changing the controls to your preference (at least let us choose between using the analog & directional buttons to move the characters). The only specialty match (past a one on one, tag, or three way match) is the Ultimate X match which you can play one on one or 3 way. There is a Falls Count Anywhere match but anything "hardcore" you do in that match you can do in any other match (all matches are no DQ & no countout) as well & you can't fight outside of the outside ringarea anyways (no going past the ramp or into the crowd) no matter what match you pick so there's really nothing special about that match. At the end of each match, there is a points screen but I don't get the point of having it when it doesn't tie into anything at all. There are bad glitches in the same where you'll get stuck trying to get in the ring & have to end the match or restart the game which is a pain in story mode if you don't save your progress after each & every single match. There are some little minor things that may or may not bug you concerning the entrances: they are only 15 second scenes (you only see them enter the arena & start to walk/run down the ramp), all single wrestler entrances so if you team together Team 3D or L.A.X...they all enter seperately, the "X" version of Chris Sabin (in his non-Motor City Machine Gun attire) & A.J. Styles (his pre-2007 look with shorts instead of tights) don't have entrances, and certain arenas (Armory & Mexico) don't show wrestler entrances but again, that's only if you really care about something minor like that.

I will give here is that I'll give TNA credit for trying to do a different type of "storyline mode" than the usual "wrestling only" storylines but again..there are so many flaws. First of all, you can only play as this fictional character...you can't play story mode with your favorite TNA character. Unlike the WWE games where you can pick different options to play different storylines, you don't have that here so once you beat the game...that's it, game over. Most of the time throughout the game, your playing these unknown fictional wrestlers over & over again (including two guys who are obivious ripoffs of Insane Clown Posse) while playing each of the TNA wrestlers once throughout the game so your seeing & playing more non-TNA guys throughout the game than the actual TNA roster itself...around half of the unlockable characters in the game are these generic unknown wrestlers. Speaking of the unlockables, you get all of them through winning your matches when you complete the storymode the first time. So after playing the storyline mode once, there's no replay value in the game.

Honestly, this game with worth around half ($15) at the most of what's being charged for it most places (around $30) because once I played & finished it in around 3 days...it's been on DVD/game rack collecting dust while the other WWE games I can continue playing based off the fact that I have different wrestlers with highly different movesets to play storymode with each time. This is a game I would only recommend for renting because you'll get your all your money's worth in the two to three days you'll play & defeat this game.

SIDE NOTE: For those wondering what the content of the Bonus DVD that came with this game from GameStop was...
Ultimate X Match: A.J. Styles vs. Petey Williams vs. Chris Sabin from Final Resolution 2005
Ultimate X Match: L.A.X. vs. Triple H (Senshi & Elix Skipper) from Bound for Glory 2007
Elevation X Match: Rhino vs. A.J. Styles from Destination X 2007
King of the Mountain Match: Kurt Angle vs. Samoa Joe vs. Chris Harris vs. A.J. Styles vs. Christian Cage from Slammiversary 2007
TerrorDome/Steel Asylum Match featuring various "X Division" wrestlers from Sacrifice 2008.

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad for the First Time   November 2, 2008

If you have played a current gen version of this game (which is really pretty fun), then you will find the ps2 version very...very lacking. No character creation, and a relatively limited roster make for a game that just cannot compete with SvR. For some reason, for almost every game that has been multi-platform recently, the developers just didn't take the time to put the same features on the ps2 versions as they to the current gen versions, even when the system has the ability to support them. But, you have to understand that this is TNA's first try, not to mention the developer they went with has never made a wrestling game before. Consider that, and they did a pretty nice job. I just wish they held back the release date a few more weeks so they could put all the features on the ps2 version. So skip this one, unless you are a die hard TNA fan, and wait until the next installment that will undoubtedly make up for all of this games rookie mistakes. Expect TNA iMPACT! the game to equal and even surpass SvR in the coming years.

1 out of 5 stars 7.5 STEAMING pILES OF CRAP OUT OF 10   September 28, 2008

TNA WRESTLING : IMPACT for PS2 Review

BAD :
- No Ref?!?
- Button mashing galore
- All characters are created equal
- No unique use of 6 sided ring
- Plot of story mode is fruckin' stupid!
- "Suicide" becomes TNA champ
- Gets beat down by LAX
- Wakes up in Mexico
- Has no memory, but is angry and has to vent rage
- Becomes (logically?) a wrestler?!?!?!
- Voice actor does absolutely nothing put this key plot point over
- There are 2 wrestlers who are blatant rip offs of ICP

- End of match there is a "points" screen...WHY?!?!
- Very few match types
- Only weapon available : folding chair
- No "Dusty finishes?" This is not TNA
- There is a video lag with more than 2 wrestlers in the ring
- You get to unlock a whole CRAP load of people you've never heard of!

Verdict : Sub-Par fighting game with no real depth. Novice fighting game fans might enjoy the story mode. Smart wrestling fans will hate it.

In my steaming piles of crap chart (10 being worst) i give it 7.5 steaming piles of crap out og 10.

2 out of 5 stars Lackluster production and a rushed product   September 21, 2008

When I went to the store to buy this game, the cashier at the counter said it was one of the best games out there. He said that it played like WWF No Mercy did on N64. So instead of taking his word for it, I rented the game and thank God I did. This game is a waste of the 6 bucks it took to rent it! For starters, you can't do slams, suplexes, or anything else that may wow you from the top rope, there are no moves you can do to double team someone, the only weapons they have for crying out loud are chairs! Furthermore, I am really winded with the tag team section of this game. The one thing that I am impressed with here is the reversal system. That is about it. If I could give it a 1.75 stars, I would because giving it a 2 is being generous. Save your money and get the new SVR 09 when it drops in November.
