Amazon.com Product Description Experience the thrill and terror all over again with Resident Evil 5 for PS3. Featuring Chris Redfield of the original Resident Evil and Sheva Alomar, a West African agent of the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance (BSAA), this sci-fi survival game is staged in a remote desert colony packed with hordes of fast-moving, quick-thinking enemies that represent a whole new breed of evil.

You'll face faster enemies backed by improved AI. View larger. | Meet Two Fierce, Playable Main Characters Back from the original title and Resident Evil: Code Veronica, former S.T.A.R.S. special forces team member Redfield is a battle-tested, founding member of the BSAA. With a reputation for superior marksmanship and phenomenal hand-to-hand combat abilities, he's on the ground and up against a new strain of evil. You'll call his shots from the same over-the-shoulder third person viewpoint that distinguished Resident Evil 4, except this time you'll also have the option of playing as his teammate, the fierce, local Alomar. Whoever you play as, updates to the earlier version's third-person control scheme offer more options and promise intuitive interactions. Learn to Work Together The new cooperative game play element focuses on the realities of a dual-agent mission, highlighting the ways in which Redfield and Alomar must work together to survive the unexpected, while still allowing them to split up and work alone. To help you maximize the potential of this setup, two-player online and offline co-op modes ensure that you have options when picking a partner. Steel yourself Against the Harsh Reality of Kijuju An advanced version of Capcom's proprietary MT Framework game engine brings groundbreaking graphics and effects to Kijuju, the highly-developed environment where this game's action takes place. New, lifelike lighting schemes highlight the differences between harsh sunlight and extreme darkness, and when you move from one to the other, you'll have to wait for your character's eyes to adjust before you can see clearly, adding to the suspense and challenge of navigating this game's environs. Face the Next Generation of Evil You'll face new enemies with faster reflexes and improved AI, designed to be as dangerous alone as they are in groups and to keep even Resident Evil masters on their toes. Thankfully, they're not the only ones who have evolved. This game also offers access to powerful new weapons variations that extend your destructive capabilities. And the updated, quick-select inventory system allows for real-time inventory management, as well as allowing characters to trade items and allowing you to place an item on the directional pad for instant access. Add all this to a detailed storyline the touches on what the past ten years have meant for Redfield and a Hollywood-caliber soundtrack, and it's clear that the latest installment in this series really does showcase all the elements at the heart of horror gaming.

mmmmm brains March 8, 2010 smullins (seattle, wa) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've just completed Resident Evil 5 for the first time, a little over 12 hours I think. The game was a lot of fun to play and very intense. Unfortunately, the game has gotten a lot of negative press and reviews. I personally liked most of what the game had to offer and think at time reviewers could be a little less critical of good titles.
There are some facts that come in to play with RE 5.
Fact #1: This is not a survival horror game, like RE 0, 1, 2 etc. Its more Action, but very intense action. I'm a huge fan of the RE series and I still enjoyed the Action slant.
Fact #2: Not pausing the game for inventory makes playing intense. I hear a lot of people complaining about this feature. I don't know why. When you have hordes of enemies coming at you and you're low on health and need to reload all your guns and you don't know if you have a grenade or if your partner's got it - I guarantee your heart will be pounding. Not getting to pause the game and instantly heal yourself, arrange your inventory, reload all your weapons - it goes a long way to create an intense playing experience.
I for one loved getting chased my chainsaw wielding zombies while trying to limp far enough away to find a grenade to chuck at them.
Fact #3: Capcom isn't racist. The scene is Africa, there are both modern and what I'll call tribal Africans in the game that you have to kill, maim, run away from. So why exactly is that racist? You have the ability to stomp on fallen zombies...just like you have in just about every other RE game. I really think people need to take a step back and consider that we're talking about a zombie game. A game about killing infected zombies. The fact that RE 5 was plagued with negative press for racism just seems ignorant and trite.
Overall, the game is great. There's nothing like killing zombies, even ones that can wield rocket launchers. I got really annoyed with my AI partner, but I have to have something to yell at so it might as well have been Sheva. The replay value is there, with lots of goodies to unlock, weapons to upgrade, scores to reach, etc. And of course there's trophies! This is a great looking game that has a nice feel and some good quality game play. The puzzles are pretty light so I'm going back through the first RE on gamecube to get my fix. After that I'll probably go through RE 5 again :)
A near-perfect game... March 3, 2010 phoong dan (International) It's hard for me to fathom how someone can not love this game if you enjoy the RE series or are into the horror genre. Reading some of the negative reviews, yes it would be nice to be able to carry a few more items. I liked in RE4 that you were able to upgrade your suitcase as you went along so you could carry more items. I wish they would have implemented that in RE5. Yes, the game play is similar to RE4, should it not be? RE4 was an awesome game for the PS2 (I actually played it on the Cube), so I think Capcom did the right thing by not changing too much for RE5. The setting changes from Spain to Africa, so of course the environments change, but the game play and feel is virtually unchanged from RE4. Personally, I liked that. Really I have no complaints of this game that would have me rate it anything less than 5 stars. The game was not too difficult on the normal setting though it of course got more challenging in the last chapter, as expected. Personally, a minor critique is that in RE4 there were little side games you got to play while you were doing the main game - remember the shooting galleries? Those were fun, and I wish they would have done that in RE5 too. But what I liked better about RE5 is I thought the whole RE story comes much more into focus in RE5 and I really liked the addition of the Tricell company and that whole angle. Some of the research/labs sets were awesome!
And I was surprised there were so many complaints about the AI for Sheeva. I have played many other games where the AI was just awful (I love the SOCOM series, but can't tell you how many times those fools in Bravo company wouldn't budge when I gave them an order or they'd get stuck trying to walk into a tree!), and I found Sheeva quite helpful on a few occasions. In fact, I think she saved me more than I saved her!
I take people's point about the series moving from being more focused on horror to action. I didn't play all of the earlier games, but I did play RE-0 and I agree that was a creepier game than RE4 or RE5. However, I feel as though whatever the series lost in creepiness, it more than makes up for in action & a well-developed storyline.
Not much you can say about the graphics except WOW! This was my first game played on the PS3 and what an upgrade from the PS2! Fantastic. If you have enjoyed the RE series in the past you should love this one too.
Re: The Mercenaries (unlockable game): The Mercenaries was also featured in RE4 and is brought back here for RE5. I love this game maybe even more than the main game! It's a very familiar format to RE4 with some different characters. I recommend you purchase the extra chapter for RE5, "Lost in Nightmares" - this will not only get you an extra chapter to play in the RE5 game (it's where Chris & Jill go to the Spencer mansion and confront Wesker), but it will also get you an alternate version of Mercenaries called "Mercenaries Reunion" with characters Excella and Barry (leader of Alpha team). You can also purchase Character Pack I and II for $1.99 each on the PS Network and pick up additional costumes for Chris & Sheeva. The Lost in Nightmares is $5.
Too difficult. Too gory. February 18, 2010 a_friend_usa (United States) 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
I bought this to play in split-screen co-op mode with my gf. We found it too difficult and too gory. It was just not any fun at all for us.
I suggest Resistance 1 Fall of Man, Rainbow 6 Vegas. Army of Two was OK.
I wish there were more games that offer side-by-side split-screen co-op mode for the campaign.
The reason I bought a PS3 February 17, 2010 Jeremy Williams (Fayetteville, AR) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I usually prefer to read or play outside to video games, so I put off getting a PS3 because I knew i would get addicted and waste too much time. I saw that RE5 was coming out and thought "If one thing was to convince me to get a PS3..." Well, i finally decided to bite the bullet and purchased a PS3 and RE5, and I have not been disappointed. All in all, it isn't as good as RE4 (I could go into detail as to why, but lets just leave it at that) but obviously the graphics are better and some of the other differences are better as well. ok, i'm starting to ramble...
Chris & Sheva - it was weird at first having some AI person following you around and yelling every 5 seconds "OK!!!", but once i got used to it, i really enjoyed that aspect of the game.
no "run and gun" - one of the biggest complaints by most people. sometimes it sucks, but you get used to it, and after playing Dead Space and Uncharted (which are almost as good) - I have come to garner respect for the increased difficulty with this aspect...I also enjoy the increased accuracy that comes with this, when you are fighting Zombies, headshots are key!
What really makes this game so great is its depth. Uncharted is great, but there's not a whole lot to it, you just follow the story, jump around like a monkey and shoot a lot of people. In RE5, every single opponent has a different optimal strategy (type of weapon, place to shoot them, etc) to beat, I like puzzles, some people don't but having a boss where you just shoot him a bunch of times isn't much fun for me, having a boss where you have to devise a strategy, shoot him in one place, then switch weapons to shoot him in his true vulnerability, thats where its at!
Anyway, great game, the Gold standard I hold every other game to. Dead Space was pretty close. Uncharted 1 was not too bad. Resistance 2 was pretty boring for me. I'm looking forward to the new DLCs coming out next month and Dead Space 2, hopefully I can find a few others that are similar to this, though I know none will be able to surpass.
