Square Enix did it again! August 29, 2010 Priscilla Wow. What a game. When I first played the Kingdom Hearts Series, I had previously played a couple of Final Fantasy games and so when I played Kingdom Hearts I, I thought of the game as a child's version of a Final Fantasy game. Most characters in this game are derived from FF and when you see the changes in the characters at first you may wonder what the heck happened. But the Kingdom Hearts series is an actual series, unlike FF, and has a plot line that develops more throughout all of its games. Kingdom Hearts II, I think, lived up to everyone's expectations for a squeal. And combining the ps2's graphics and the awesome character and world designs this game can please anyone. :) It was worth the wait!
Wonderful game of fantasy even if the story is too sappy at times August 15, 2010 ahstrmn (Tucson, AZ, USA) A great gameplay with excellent graphics. The friendship story is way too long and gets lost in its emotions, but the mystery/intrigue is very good. The boss fights range from lots of fun to very difficult. The platforming is easily done with options of some skateboarding.
Linear button-masher for diehard Disney fans only August 13, 2010 renfield1969 (Baltimore MD) Kingdom Hearts II has all the characters from the first game, plus many more. It is very pretty, and the Disney characters you run into and team up with, such as Tron and Captain Jack Sparrow, are a real treat for fans of Disney movies and history. Unfortunately, sequels demand bigger and better, and in order to fit everything in several obvious sacrifices had to be made.
Gameplay is almost entirely linear. The worlds and landscapes are incredibly beautiful, but you are allowed almost no exploration of them. In almost all cases, you have one hallway to run down without the option of even turning back the way you came. Even when other worlds have opened up, the usual reason to re-visit a previously played world is to gain more experience to help you in combat, not that you'll need it. That brings us to the next problem.
There are a lot of bells and whistles added to combat. Aside from magic spells, there are also Summon options to invite additional characters to help you, transformations into more powerful forms for Sora, and special "Limit" attacks offered by your companions or by the enemies themselves. Unfortunately, that all adds up to a complicated, difficult to follow mess. It is unclear exactly what help is being offered by summoned characters even if you can manage to navigate to the correct menu when you want them. Sora's transformations have different (and sometimes lesser) abilities than his regular form, making them fairly unappealing. And the "Limit" commands are all on the same button, whether it is aid from a friend or the special trigger you need to defeat an opponent, which just get in the way of each other. Not that you need any of that, anyway, since almost all boss fights can be settled just by whacking the guy with your keyblade.
All of that could still make for a fun game, if not for the interminable linking sequences. Practically every building you enter has an animated sequence you have to sit through before you are allowed to play, and usually they last for quite a long time. It is incredibly frustrating to sit through a long scene of exposition, only to have control finally returned so that you can walk a few feet to open a door and activate yet another animated sequence. It turns out that you can skip these sequences, but then you would miss out on the over-complicated story.
An awesome sequel to an awesome game! August 11, 2010 My most favorite Video Game used to be Kingdom Hearts, now I cannot decide between Kingdom Hearts or Kingdom Hearts II. It takes place after Chain of Memories(Or Re:Chain of Memories in the U.S.) The very start of the game shows what happened so far starting in Hallow Bastion and the last scene inside Castle Oblivion. The start of the game starts not with Sora, but with a boy who hasn't been introduced yet except in Kingdom Hearts 358/2 days-- Roxas.
The game is fun and entertaining and I still find myself trying to level up more despite the fact I've beaten the game multiple times.
There are 2 battle menus that you can switch between instead of one, with the options to change Party Members without the use of Save Points.
Some of the worlds are revisited in this game such as Agrabah(Aladdin) and Atlantica(The Little Mermaid). Other worlds are brand new and both new and old friends are met in places such as The Land of Dragons(Mulan) Beast's Castle(Beauty and the Beast) and the Pridelands(The Lion King), and along with that a couple of new Live Action movie worlds are added, Port Royal(Pirates of the Caribbean) and Space Paranoids(Tron).
The cutscenes have gotten longer and are still interesting, fun,(and funny) to watch. There are a lot more cutscenes than in the original, I think, some activating themselves even not 20 seconds after a previous was already watched. Luckily you can skip the cutscenes now, even the high quality starting cutscene can be paused or skipped! Although sadly you cannot see these cutscenes again in a Theater like Chain Of Memories.
Not all the worlds are required to complete the game, however they're required to obtain certain items that are only available there.
The 100 Acre Wood is optional, and so is Atlantica, which has shrunken down to the size of 2 rooms and 5 musicals(A minigame game, SORT OF like Dance Dance Revolution, but different)
Overall, this game is fun and amusing and the new ways to battle make the battles more interesting.
If you liked the first game, you're gonna like this game!
(Also on the back of the box, the game's rating(E 10+, i think it was recommended for) says the game has "Mild Blood", even though no matter how many times I have gone through the game, I have not seen any blood at all, not even in scenes that originally had blood in the movie versions of those clips. Also it says something about "Use of alcohol", which only happens once in Port Royal after Barbossa explains the reason his crew is undead(It is also a scene from the movie Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl)
Eh, perfect for younger children. July 29, 2010 Caveman Easy even on hardest gaming mode... Not for someone looking for a challenge, perfect for children, tons of boss battles. Simple and straight to the point, controls wise and storyline wise. You get your moneys worth, a lot to do.
